Sutures

Biodenix Technologies carries the dental sutures your practice requires.

Generally speaking, dental sutures come in two categories: absorbable and non-absorbable. Our brands include Cytoplast Sutures from Osteogenics; Look Sutures for Dental Surgery; Johnson & Johnson Sutures for Dental Surgery; and Coated VICRYL Sutures.

Non-absorbable Sutures and Absorbable SuturesDental Sutures

Non-absorbable (also commonly referred to as non-dissolving) sutures are made of synthetic materials, including nylon and polypropylene, silk and cotton. To facilitate easy removal, non-absorbable sutures have a smooth surface, allowing them to be easily and painlessly snipped and pulled out after the wound is healed. Thin-yet-strong, non-absorbable sutures are “non-reactive” to the recipient’s immune response. Our non-absorbable sutures are comprised of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene or polyetrafluoroethene) a synthetic fluoropolymer and are available through a number of leading brands.

Absorbable (also commonly referred to as self-dissolving) sutures are degraded by the body over time. The body reacts to the sutures, attacking the stitch material as a “foreign” substance. In almost every instance, absorbable sutures are not used on the surface of the skin, rather they are buried in the skin or placed in the body, particularly during internal surgery. Absorbable sutures are generally made from treated collagen harvested from the small intestines of sheep or cattle. Twisted tightly together, the collagen strands are machined and polished to resemble monofilament. As well, many brands of absorbable sutures are now treated with chromium salt. Referred to as “chromic”, these sutures have increased tensile strength and have greater resistance to digestion and degradation. This means less tissue reactivity and patient discomfort while ensuring wounds are better stabilized and have more time to heal. Chromic absorbable sutures are classified based on their respective absorption rates, which can range from 10, 20, and 40 days. Contact Biodenix Technologies to ensure you are ordering the correct absorbable sutures. We carry a number of leading absorbable suture brands.
