Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the number one killer, accounting for more deaths than traffic accidents, breast cancer, prostate cancer, stroke, AIDS and house fires combined. However, you don't have to be a doctor to save the life of someone suffering from SCA. New Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) enable even non-medical personnel to restore heart rhythm and life. With a defibrillator close at hand for rapid defibrillation, the chances of an individual surviving SCA can be greater than 50%. Without a defibrillator, on average, only 5% of SCA victims survive an out-of-hospital attack. An AED can monitor heart rhythms, alerting the user if the heart has stopped beating effectively. If required, an AED can deliver an electric shock to the heart, which most of the time, will restart the heart.
